The Blurb (aka back of the book)

When killing people is your job, there’s no such thing as a vacation.
Then again, how often does an assassin live long enough to enjoy her retirement? In this line of work, you either get lucky or you get dead. And since I destroyed my nemesis Mab Monroe a few weeks ago, all of Ashland’s lowlifes are gunning to make a name for themselves by taking out the lethal Spider—me, Gin Blanco. So I’m leaving behind my beloved barbecue joint and heading south with my baby sister, Bria, to cool my heels in a swanky beach town. Call it a weekend of fun in the sun. But when a powerful vampire with deadly elemental magic threatens an old friend of Bria’s, it looks like I’ll have to dig my silverstone knives out of my suitcase after all. Complicating matters further is the reappearance of Detective Donovan Caine, my old lover. But Donovan is the least of my problems. Because this time, the danger is hot on my trail, and not even my elemental Ice and Stone magic may be enough to save me from getting buried in the sand—permanently.

MY REVIEW

Gin is back-----Well, mostly.
After defeating Mab (the evil fire elemental ) in the last book, Gin (aka The Spider) finds herself a little melancholy. Everyone either knows or assumes the owner and chef of the Pork Pit is the one and only Spider. Greatest Elemental Assassin ever (what can I say I’m partial)! Finn wants her to take a vacation—which I must say she definitely needs—after all, now that she has defeated Mab everyone is out for her head. They all want to claim the glory of killing The Spider (as if that will ever happen!) Ultimately Gin fights the vacation thing, but then after being attacked she decides maybe she does need a little R&R. So along with her new found sister, Bria, she heads to Blue Marsh. Kind of like a resort town, Blue Marsh was also home to her lost sister Bria for a long time. She is happy to be here, but there is still a lot of tension between her and her sister. After meeting Callie, Bria’s best friend, Gin finds herself a little jealous. All of this is new to her; she is not really an emotional kind of gal. So like The Spider has always known—there is never a break. Gin finds herself smack in the middle of a realty moguls attempts to take over Blue marsh. Callie has been threatened and now Gin must step in to save her sister’s best friend, and hopefully save her relationship with her sister at the same time. Along with Owen(Gin’s yummy man) Finn( the foster brother and Bria’s man) and a few other surprise people The Spider is back and taking no prisoners in her bid to free the world of one more asshole! (Excuse the language but that is just what he is!)

So, after anxiously awaiting this latest installment in the wonderful Elemental Assassins Series, I must say I was contemplating whether I would get as drawn into this one as I have all the previous ones. I was not let down! All the avid Spider fans out there will not be disappointed! I was instantly drawn into the story and it was amazing. I found myself not wanting to put the book down! I even stood at the stove reading while I was cooking! Gin is such a dynamic character—full of determination and always toughness. I loved how she had this whole new side to her where she started opening up to some of her feelings. You all need to go get the book ASAP!!!!!
So, I now find myself awaiting yet the next book in the series –SERIOUSLY—August cannot come soon enough!!!!

5 STARS!!

Interview with Mindy Klasky & Giveaway

First off i would like to extend a huge Thank You to Mindy for taking the time (and a chance) on a little known Blogger. I have really enjoyed reading all of the books in all of her paranormal series and I highly reccomed them to all of you. Also, as you will notice in the questions---I really want the books to continue (LOL) and my questioning proves it :)

I hope you have enjoyed my reviews and you will all go out and support this wonderful author. Before we move on to the interview here is how you can contact her:

Mindy Klasky learned to read when her parents shoved a book in her hands and told her that she could travel anywhere in the world through stories. She never forgot that advice.
Mindy’s travels took her through multiple careers. After graduating from Princeton University, Mindy considered becoming a professional stage manager or a rabbi. Ultimately, though, she settled on being a lawyer, working as a litigator at a large Washington firm. When she realized that lawyering kept her from writing (and dating and sleeping and otherwise living a normal life), Mindy became a librarian, managing large law firm libraries. Mindy now writes full time.
For years, Mindy’s dating life was a travel extravaganza as well. She balanced twenty-eight first dates in one year, selecting eligible gentlemen from sources as varied as Washingtonian magazine ads, Single Volunteers of D.C., and supposedly-certain recommendations from best friends. Ultimately, she swore off the dating scene entirely. After two years of carefully-enforced datelessness, she made one last foray onto Match.com, where she met her husband – on her first match.
Mindy’s travels have also taken her through various literary genres. In addition to her Harlequin Special Editions, Mira, and Red Dress Ink books, Mindy has written traditional fantasy novels for Roc (including the award-winning, best-selling The Glasswrights’ Apprentice), short stories, and nonfiction essays.
In her spare time, Mindy quilts, knits, and tries to tame the endless to-be-read shelf in her home library. Her husband and cats do their best to fill the left-over minutes.

Interview

1: What inspired you to start writing in the paranormal genre?

Years ago, I used to believe that all of my story ideas were in the fantasy genre – I grew up reading Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis, and other traditional fantasy authors.  I wrote several rather dark fantasy novels, and I wanted a break from the grim secondary worlds I had created.  One day, stretching for something that felt COMPLETELY different from the dark, depressing world I'd been working in, I sketched out an idea for a novel:  "Jane Madison has a problem.  Or two.  Or three."  And that was the beginning of my being a paranormal romance author.

2: In the Jane Madison series she is a very stubborn gal, Are you anything like her? Or even any of your other characters?

Jane and I have a lot in common – we're both librarians, we both have a love of Shakespeare, and we both have a tendency to imagine that the absolute worst is going to happen in any given situation.  (That said, we have some differences, too.  I'm still looking for my witchcraft familiar!)

I instill each of my characters with a little bit of myself.  My love of baking got transferred to Melissa in the Jane Madison series.  My former work as a stage manager got shifted to Kira Franklin in How Not to Make a Wish.  Even my life as a lawyer influenced David Montrose, when he is at his prosecutorial best!

3: Who are your favorite Authors and what are you currently reading?

I read a lot of different authors, skipping around between middle grade, young adult, historical romance, and contemporary romance (with a healthy dose of non-fiction and random other books tossed in.)  Right now, I am fascinated by the fantasy-romance of Stephanie Dray's historical series that starts with Lily of the Nile (about the daughter of Cleopatra and Mark Antony).  I've also been enjoying the light contemporary romances of Kristan Higgins.

4:What initially made you decide to start writing?

I have written stories since I was in elementary school – in seventh grade, my best friend and I decided to write a sequel to The Lord of the Rings.  (Alas, we never finished it…)  After years of playing at writing, I became serious when I was working as a litigator at a major Washington, D.C. law firm – I needed something that was completely different from the day-to-day grind of practicing law.

5: What is the most challenging part of your writing?

Starting.  I find it incredibly difficult to start writing each day – there are always a hundred and one distractions to keep me from typing those first few words.  (Similarly, I find it difficult to start each new novel – I try to trick myself by writing an outline, so that it feels as if the work is already in progress.)

6: Do you have more books planned for any of the series’ I have featured this week?

Next up, I'm going to be writing a novella that bridges the worlds of the Jane Madison series and Fright Court (both are set in Washington, D.C.)  After that, I'm planning on another Jane Madison novel, and then another Fright Court novel.  Whew – I just need another couple of months to get added to this year!

7: If you had to choose one genre to stick with which one would it be?

I love writing light contemporary paranormals, stories about real women in unreal situations.

8: Is there anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

It's always fun to hear from readers, by email, or in comments on my website.  Readers' comments do influence what I write; when readers say they want to hear more of a particular story, that story becomes a higher priority.  So don't hesitate to stop by and tell me what you think about my books!

9: Can you give us a little insight into Kira from How Not to Make a Wish? Did her character just come to you or is she based on someone you know?

I stage managed plays all through high school and college, so the professional aspects of Kira's nature came to me naturally.  I also used to live in the Twin Cities, so Kira's Minneapolis home felt familiar.  As with all my characters, though, Kira is a composite of a lot of real friends and acquaintances (and a fair amount of made up people, too!)

10: What made you decide to carry the As You Wish Series the way you did?  With each book being a stand-alone did it make it harder when you were writing them?

With the As You Wish series, I wanted to give readers a chance to drop in anywhere in the series, without needing to read the books in order.  While Teel, the genie, continues from book to book, the other characters are all new, telling a totally self-contained story.

That method of storytelling was somewhat challenging – I needed to create a new world for each volume, figuring out new characters, new settings, and new background details.  But that's part of the fun of writing too!

11: Are there any plans to continue on with another book that comes after Fright Court?

I look forward to telling the next story about Sarah, James, and Chris.  While they'll figure into the (currently unnamed) novella that I hope to release this spring, they won't get their own full novel until next year.  (I hope to release that in January or February, but part of that schedule will depend on other writing commitments.  There aren't enough hours in the day!

12:  Okay, so now that I have asked you all those deep and meaningful questions----What would be your perfect paranormal date?

I'm much more of a "beta" girl than an "alpha" girl.  While I've adored writing about alpha heroes like David Montrose (a man who can take charge of any disaster in an instant!), my heart secretly melts at quiet, supportive guys like John, in How Not to Make a Wish.

As for specific paranormal creatures to date?  My heart is already taken, so I won't kiss and tell J

13: What is your favorite type of character?

My favorite characters – heroines, heroes, or villains – are complex.  They have multiple layers.  They have self-doubts.  They don't always know the straight path toward their ultimate goal – sometimes they have to wander a bit, testing themselves (and their friends, and their lovers…)  I like characters who feel real, rather than superhuman, perfect specimens.

14:  If you had to take only 2 books with you to a deserted island which ones would they be?

Bulfinch's Mythology (think of all those myths that can be retold in the modern era!)

Can I cheat and take an entire encyclopedia?  I love learning new things every day!

15: My final question, and one I know is bugging everyone who has read any of the books in the featured series-----------Do you have any more books planned to keep any of the series’ going??

Jane Madison:  The next project will be a novella in the spring, and a new novel in the fall.

Fright Court:  A novella in the spring and a new novel next winter.

As You Wish:  Nothing planned at the moment, but that can always change – just as soon as I come up with another story about a magic lamp, a woman in need, and a hero waiting in the wings!

Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and answer my questions. I have thoroughly enjoyed having  Mindy Klasky week here at Kristina’s Paranormal Books. If anyone has any questions for Mindy please feel free to ask :)

In How Not to Make a Wish, stage manager Kira Franklin discovers a dusty brass lamp while she’s cleaning out a prop closet at her down-at-the-heels dinner theater. When she polishes the lamp, she’s astonished to discover a genie, bound to grant her wishes. The first wish is easy: Kira arranges to stage manage a production of Romeo and Juliet at the prestigious Landmark Stage, where the hunky Drew Myers plays a leading role. She soon discovers, though, that wishes and genies (not to mention true love) aren’t always what they seem!

  • THE BLURB:

In When Good Wishes Go Bad, Becca Morris thrives in her job as a dramaturg/producer — at least until her current production is derailed by threatened copyright litigation. Even worse, her boyfriend has gone on the lam, stealing her life savings and most of the theater’s funds. That’s when a brass lamp enters the picture — a brass lamp, with a wish-granting genie… Before Becca knows it, she’s juggling magic, a brilliant new play by a hot new playwright, and a battle of guerilla gardeners (yes, really!) the likes of which New York City has never seen.

  • THE BLURB:

In To Wish or Not To Wish, actress Erin Hollister’s life is falling apart — she has just lost her day-job, and her boyfriend dumped her when he thought she was pregnant. Everything changes, though, when Erin finds a magic lamp, complete with a wish-granting genie! Soon, Erin is trying to balance her role in a blockbuster musical, her obligations to her family, and her attraction to the stunning chef who runs the local neighborhood cafe. As if that weren’t enough, Erin just might be falling in love with her genie!

    MY REVIEW

Each book in this series is a standalone. They are all well written and have great story arcs. I couldn't quite get on the train for this series though. I'm more of a witch/vamp/shifter person myself, so when you throw in a genie I am kind of out of my comfort zone.

I did however like the books. The main characters in them are all amazing. The only thing that I feel would have made them a little better is some more romantic interaction. It was a nice change from the usual stuff I read though. As with the other two series I have reviewed this week I have found that I really do enjoy reading chick-lit (as long as it has a paranormal vibe :) Unfortunately this series is only available in e-book format :(

You should definately go out and give this series a shot. I did and I have to say it was well worth it!

    Happy Reading!!!

    The Blurb:

    Which is more unlikely?
Meeting a single, straight, reasonably attractive, willing-to-commit man?
Or discovering a secret cache of magic books?
For good-girl Jane Madison, neither has a shot in hell of coming true -- until the day she finds a hidden room . . .
Now she's done a bit of experimenting and found a spell that makes her irresistible to men -- even those who have previously ignored her. And another that turns a cat into her witch's familiar (a snarky, critical, self-absorbed man -- pretty much a typical male). Though her impulsive acts of magic have brought a warder (sexy, grouchy, elusive and determined to stop her from using magic) down on her, Jane's not willing to let go of this fantastic new life.
Though she wonders about having things that aren't "real," she's having too much fun to stop. After all, no one ever said being a witch was easy . . .

    MY REVIEW

Jane Madison is a reference librarian at Peabridge Library in DC. She loves her job, but always feels like life is rather boring. She is about to find out that boring will never again be in her vocabulary. When the main librarian tells Jane that the board is cutting costs and her salary will be greatly reduced, she just doesn’t know what to do.  She doesn’t want to have to leave the library and her IB (that’s imaginary boyfriend). SO she comes to an agreement and gets to move into the cottage behind the library—RENT FREE!!  Now she is able to stay at the library and admire her IB, James. He of course has no idea she has the hots for him and they both go on about their own business (until later in the story, but I don’t do spoilers) So, with the help of her BFF Melissa, who by the way owns the best bakery ever, she moves into the cottage.

Little does she know that the night she decides to check out the basement will be the night that changes everything she knows.  In the basement she finds a ton of books, odds and ends, and a rather large cat statue. She speaks from one book, and all of a sudden there is a man standing there. Enter Neko, the silly familiar. It seems Jane just unlocked her witchy powers (she really isn’t too happy to have her life thrown upside down). Upstairs she goes only to have a rather large and imposing man come to her door and tell her she shouldn’t have done what she had. (Mind you this is after she utters a spell that she really shouldn’t have J )The wonderfully gorgeous; albeit cranky, man is David and he is her Warder. The job of a warder is to protect their witches from harm. She sure is going to need that warder because all through the book Jane gets into curious and sticky situations. Take James for instance,  just wait until you read what he does. I was so mad!!   Anyhow, I absolutely loved this book. It is a great change from the dark and dreary readings that I usually do. It was nice to see all of the relationships intertwining and coming together just like many of mine have here in reality. Jane is a special gal, she is stubborn, smart, witty…but she also has a little bit of self-doubt, which I think puts her right there with just about every woman in the world.

I was laughing and biting my nails at times through this one. If you are ready for a different kind of paranormal Jane Madison is your woman!

    The Blurb:

Librarian-witch Jane learns a magical lesson the hard way: use it or lose it! Her neglected powers are disappearing before her eyes, her handsome warder David Montrose is ignoring her, her cat-like familiar has moved out of her home, and her family life is in chaos. (Really — what octogenarian grandmother decides to get married — and with orange-and-silver bridesmaid dresses?) Jane stakes everything on one last-ditch spell — only to find that magic has a way of making its own complications.

    MY REVIEW
Jane has been neglectful and she has no one to blame but herself. She has lost everything that meant anything to her, but she isn't sure if she cares or not. She is at odds in this bbok, Not knowing if she wants to continue on the magic path or just be a "palin Jane". She finds herself put against overwhelmingly bad odds to  bring her magic back. Her basment has been a virtual holding tank for all of her magical items while she has negleted to use them, and now they are disappearing and turning to dust. She needs her handsome Warder and crazy familiar, but they seem to have other things to do with their time. She is torn between being who she used to be and embracing who she is meant to be.
So far this is the last book in this series, That makes me very sad :( I loved watching Jane as she made her way through impossible circumstances and crazy relationships. Her life seemed so much like mine (well minus the magic ;) I felt a connection to her that only a few stories have brought to me. She has been zany, stubborn, lovimg and zany again and I find that I miss reading about her. I do like how this book turned out though. It has a few surprising twists and the ending had me smiling and filled with warm fuzzies :)
It was really fin reading this and I think that even the man in your life might enjoy the Jane Mdison series as much as I did. While it is slightly lacking in the action department it makes up for it in the relationship and magical departments. I am not going to wirte anymore about this book because I have a overwhelming desire to spoil it! I will say that you will love this one as much as the first two. I only hope (and Hey, i will beg if I have to!) that this series will continue on. I have thorughly enjoyed this and I hope you all will too!

Sorcery and The Single Girl--Mindy Klasky

                 Publisher: Res Ipsa Press
                 Sold by: Amazon Digital Services
                 Series: Jane Madison Book #2

    The Blurb:

Jane Madison’s story continues in Sorcery and the Single Girl. Librarian-witch Jane has been “invited” to join the prestigious Washington Coven — a necessary step, if she’s going to hold onto her feline familiar, her beloved arcane books, and her hunky warder, David Montrose. The Coven’s tests become even more challenging when Jane must decide if she can trust her new witchy friend, Haylee. And then there’s that handsome Brit, Graeme Henderson, who is proving himself to be most distracting… Jane is about to be tested in ways she’s never imagined – and, pass or fail, nothing will ever be the same

    MY REVIEW

In the second book of this series we find Jane facing even bigger spells, more male crap, best friend issues, and to top it all off she is about to have a showdown with the local coven! She is still witty, smart Jane, but I find in this book she seems even more down on herself. She finds someone who she thinks is the perfect guy. She can be herself with him, and even tell him here secrets. Is it too good to be true though? I mean, remember James????  I loved how this book developed. It grabbed me from the beginning and wouldn’t let me go until I was through. Literally I read it in one sit-down. Jane finds her relationships struggling, her magic is fine, but she is just having a hard time balancing personal life with witchy life, and it is all going to come to a head sooner or later.  I really like David…I mean, why doesn’t Jane just act on the feelings she obviously has for him? Neko is also in this one, up to his usual shenanigans. He cracks me up. I wish I was half as witty and quick on the come backs as he is.

I couldn’t wait to read this book and it sure didn’t disappoint. All the characters from the first book were all there, Along with a few new ones. Which while I am on the subject of new characters-------Do you all remember “those” girls???  Maybe you were one, or you wanted to be one, well they are in this book. At first I wasn’t too keen on the idea of little Jane having to go up against the girls of the coven. Man, was I ever in for a shock. That particular part of the book made me laugh, cry and jump up and down for the little people. ;)

The ending will throw you for a loop and leave you waiting for the next book in the series.  If you enjoyed the first Jane Madison book then this second one will not disappoint.

    The Mortal Bone--Marjorie M. Liu

Reading level: Ages 18 and up
    Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Ace; Original edition (December 27, 2011)
    Language: English
    ISBN-10: 1937007189
    ISBN-13: 978-1937007188

    The Blurb:

When the bond Maxine Kiss shares with the demons tattooed on her skin is deliberately severed, the demon hunter is left vulnerable and unprotected. For the first time in ten thousand years, the demons have a taste of freedom. And as the little demons grow more violent and unpredictable, Maxine starts to fear they will lose their minds without her. Reuniting won't be easy, since a greater temptation waits for these hellions: a chance to return to their lives as Reaper Kings, and unleash hell on Earth.

    My Review

Max thought they would be together forever. She thought they would never leave her, at least not for quite a long time. Now she finds herself missing the boys. They have been torn from her, not by her choosing, but by an unseen hand that seems to think it’s all a game. They are free, off running around causing trouble and she is left with a hollow empty feeling. The boys are changing. They no longer have her heart to guide them in their decisions. They are ready to rule again, and not with compassion and love.  Max needs to find a way to corral them again before things get too far out of hand and the world becomes a red-river.
They spend most of their time separated in this book. I personally liked the idea of separating them. It showed me a side of Max that I had yet to see. She is vulnerable in this book. She has to learn how to go without the protection of Zee and the boys and do things for herself. Don’t get me wrong she has help. Grant is there, along with a few other characters. Old Wolf comes into this one later on. But ultimately we get to see Max without the mask of the boys. In previous novels it was all about how the boys and Max did this, they did that..etc. Now, in this book, she goes it mostly alone. She has to find a solution to save the world, she can’t just tell the boys to fix it—because ultimately the boys are the problem. She (and us along with her) finds out a few more details about her mother and father and that will ultimately give her a lot to think about throughout the book.

I loved this one. I waited a long time for it to come out, and was actually lucky enough to win my copy (signed and all). It was definitely a far cry from the earlier books. It brought a whole new level of understanding and emotion to the series. It had just the right amount of action, love and self-discovery that will draw you in and leave you wishing you had the next book in the series right there to read J

***On A Side note*****   Just wait until the ending….something is thrown out there that will leave you going holy freaking crap I can’t believe it!!!!  Let me know once you read it I am interested to hear what everyone thinks J
    Happy Reading!

    Here is the Blurb:
Sarah Anderson has found her dream job: Clerk of Court for the District of
Columbia Night Court. Dream job, that is, until she’s attacked in the open
courtroom by a vampire defendant. And until she’s forced to take self-defense
lessons from her boss, the enigmatic vampire James Morton. And until she learns
that she can’t share the truth about any of that with her best friend, Allison Ward – even over delectable cupcakes from the Cake Walk bakery.Soon,
Sarah is surrounded by vampires, griffins, and sprites – all members of a secret
supernatural court. And when a deceptively easy-going reporter starts to ask
questions, Sarah wonders just what answers she is supposed to give….

    MY REVIEW
Sara is a wayward college drop out. She has tried so manyjobs that even I was thinking Holy Crap! She has finally found the job that shereally wants to do. Clerk of Court for the Night Court in DC. Her first nightof work she is taken into the courtroom where she proceeds to get the shock ofher life. This is no ordinary Night Court; this one is filled with vampires and
other beings. She stands there in shock as a door opens in the floor and out
comes the prisoner. Unfortunately that isn’t all that shocks her. She is
attacked by that very same prisoner and nearly drained. Her boss, ever charming
(sarcasm here) James takes her from the room and into his office. It is there
that she is given his blood to heal. Sheis introduced to a whole new world that she never knew existed. Then he triesto fire her. Oh but Sara is a head strong individual and will not have it. She is bound and determined to have this job. She vows to get over her fear and really
do a great job. Amidst the training (James said she needed to defend herself)
and the filing of papers Sara finds herself thrown in the middle of a century
long court battle with a vampire who has been draining humans. She decides that
she can help. She makes some mistakes along the way, like telling her best
friend Allison about vampires. It kills her to not tell her. Well, Allison
freaks out (who wouldn’t? Well besides us paranormal lovers). James finds out
and has to erase her memory. Now Sara is upset that she must keep this secret
from her BFF. That’s not all though, she is on the hunt for a killer,
kidnapped, told some astounding and life changing news. Through the story Sara
learns a lot about herself and finds she may just have eyes and feelings for
two very important and very different characters. She meets lots of different
people from all ranges of paranormal society, and could she, organized and
mostly defenseless Sara share something with them all????

I loved this book! Ithad just the right amount of funny, drama, violence, and Love! Sara is a
dynamic character who like me is a little awkward but a lot smart. She is a
strong character and enhances the book with her witty remarks and crazy antics.
I was absorbed in this book from start to finish. I loved the flow and I could
really feel the awkwardness when Sara felt it. At the end of the book I still
had some unanswered questions, but what good book answers them all??? It was an
exciting and refreshing change from the regular paranormal that I normally
read. I was a laughing, mouth-hanging open, nail biting woman as I read this
book. I really hope that Mindy decides
to continue on in this series.

I highly recommend this book. It will lift you up and spin
you around on a crazy, fun filled paranormal trip.
    Until Next Time Lovelies
    Happy Reading
